Sassolungo Normal Route III+
Via the normal route to the landmark of the Val Gardena
are you ready for your adventure in the mountains?
Tour description
The Sassolungo, at 3,181m, towers majestically above the Val Gardena. It is the landmark of Val Gardena and a popular holiday destination for climbers and hikers. The entire Sassolungo group is an impressive mountain massif and offers completely different and new landscapes when viewed from different directions. A whole new world opens up to you within the Sassolungo cirque: you are in the middle of the Dolomites and their mountaineering history. The first tourist ascent of the Saslonch (Ladin) on August 13, 1869 is credited to the co-founder of the Austrian Alpine Club Paul Grohmann, who was extremely busy in the Dolomites.
Come with me to the Sassolungo! Not only will I guide you safely up this labyrinthine mountain, but I will also tell you one or two anecdotes about my local mountain.
detailed description
The normal route to the Sassolungo begins at the Toni Demetz Hut. We start here early in the morning and head to the beginning of the Fassanerband, the start of the actual route. Here we put on our climbing equipment and continue climbing with rope. At the end of the Fassanerband the first climbing point with level 3 difficulty awaits us. This already reveals the difficult orientation on this mountain, which has already proven to be problematic for some alpinists. We continue climbing and reach the former glacier on the Sassolungo - we are already in the heart of the Sassolungo. Now we climb further up a rocky ridge and, after a spectacular climbing section with an exciting view of the ice gully, we reach the amphitheater of the Sassolungo. After a short rest, we continue along the guide channel to the Langkofekl bivouac. Here you have to overcome the actual key pitch of the route. We climb the yellow tower in III+ grade with a spectacular view of the Comici hut at the foot of the Sassolungo north face. It's not far from here and we'll soon reach the main peak of the Sassolungo. After a long rest at the summit, we begin the descent. By climbing and abseiling we return to the Toni Demetz Hut full of great experiences.
It is also possible to spend the night at the Toni-Demetz Hut the evening before and then start the tour from there the following day.
