Tour Details

At 3,905 m, the Ortler rises as the highest mountain in South Tyrol and the entire Tyrol region. Its glaciated slopes and dramatic ridges have shaped alpine history since its legendary first ascent in 1804, ordered by Archduke Johann of Austria. Today, the Ortler remains one of the most coveted summit goals in the Eastern Alps.

Among all its routes, the Hintergrat stands out as a true alpine masterpiece. This elegant and exposed ridge is often mentioned in the same breath as the Hörnligrat, Biancograt, Große Zinne Normal Route, or Stüdlgrat—a collection of the most iconic climbs in the Alps. The Hintergrat ascent combined with the descent via the Normal Route forms one of the most beautiful ridge crossings in the entire region.

The route offers everything that defines a classic high-alpine climb: sharp rock ridges, airy steps, mixed sections, and panoramic positions throughout. First climbed in August 1805 by J. Pichler and companions, it remains a tour for climbers seeking a genuine alpine challenge and an unforgettable summit experience.

With your local IFMGA mountain guide from South Tyrol, you follow in the footsteps of the first ascensionists—safely, efficiently, and with the deep local knowledge that this mountain demands.
