Ortler 3,905m Hintergrat Ridge

One of the most beautiful ridge climbs in the Eastern Alps.

are you ready for your adventure in the mountains?

Tour description

At 3,905m, the Ortler is the highest mountain in South Tyrol and the Tyrol region. The heavily glaciated mountain is the main peak of the Ortler Alps in the southern Eastern Alps. Its first ascent in 1804 on the orders of Archduke John of Austria is one of the most important mountaineering achievements of that time.
The Ortler is now considered one of the most important summit destinations in the Eastern Alps. The normal route leads north to the summit. All climbs to the Ortler are demanding alpine tours. The Ortler north face is actually the largest ice wall in the Eastern Alps. Other climbs include the Hintergrat, the normal route from the Payerhütte and the Hochjochgrat.
Great crossing of the Ortler. One of the most beautiful ridge tours in the Eastern Alps.
The ascent is via the back ridge and the descent is via the normal route.
The Hintergrat is a real classic and is mentioned in the same breath as Hörnligrat, Bisncograt, Große Zinne - Normalweg and Stüdlgrat.

The first ascent of the Hintergrate on the Ortler took place in August 1805 by J. Pichler and companions. Experience the same emotions of the first climbers with your mountain guide from South Tyrol.

detailed description

The tour begins before sunrise from the Hintergrathütte. We climb up, always keeping to the left of the ridge. Depending on the conditions, you may also have to wear crampons. We climb higher and higher through the southwest face of the Hintergrad. After a bit of ridge climbing we reach the first ice field. After this, continuing to climb the ridge, we reach the signal head at 3,725m. This is not climbed but bypassed. Now you reach a short steep turn and a short, smooth intersection. This is also the key point of the tour. Your mountain guide will secure you over some nasty climbing sections. After further ridge climbing we reach the second ice field. This one is steeper than the first (approx. 35-40 degrees). After the ice rink, a 25m high wall presents the final difficulties of the ascent. The summit of the 3,905m high Ortler is already in sight, as are the mountaineers who have climbed the Ortler via the normal route.
