Full Description

The Via Ferrata delle Mesules, also known as the Pößnecker Klettersteig, is one of the great classic via ferratas in the Dolomites and one of the oldest ferratas ever built in the Alps. Located on the dramatic walls of the Sella Group above Val Gardena and Sellajoch, this historic route offers steep climbing, exposed alpine terrain and a true high-mountain adventure in the heart of the Dolomites.

Built in 1912, the route is famous for its direct and athletic ascent through steep chimneys, ladders and exposed rock passages leading onto the vast high plateau of the Sella massif. The lower section contains the main technical difficulties, while the upper part becomes a spectacular alpine traverse through wild limestone landscapes with panoramic views toward Marmolada, Sassolungo, Piz Boè and the surrounding Dolomite peaks.

Compared to easier and more panoramic ferratas such as Via Ferrata Averau or Via Ferrata Ra Gusela Nuvolau, the Via Ferrata delle Mesules is significantly more demanding and alpine in character. The route requires very good fitness, sure-footedness and previous via ferrata experience, especially because of the long descent and sustained mountain terrain.

One of the highlights of the tour is crossing the impressive Sella plateau, one of the most iconic high-alpine landscapes in the Dolomites. Depending on the chosen route and conditions, the tour can pass near Rifugio Boè and Rifugio Pisciadù, two classic mountain huts in the Sella massif that add even more authentic alpine atmosphere to the experience.

Because of its historical importance, demanding climbing and spectacular setting, the Via Ferrata delle Mesules is considered one of the true classic guided via ferrata experiences in the Dolomites.Together with a certified IFMGA mountain guide from Dolomagic Guides, you can safely experience this legendary Sella Group via ferrata while benefiting from expert route management, local knowledge and maximum safety in steep alpine terrain.
